When consulting beats a retainer
A retainer makes sense when nobody on your team has the time or the background to do the work. Consulting makes sense when you already have someone who can, and what they are missing is direction: what to fix first, what to ignore, and why the last three things they tried did not move the needle.
This is not a lesser version of SEO services. It is the same method used across every project we run, handed to you instead of applied for you.
What an engagement actually covers
A real audit, not a template
Technical, on-page and off-page reviewed together, because the parts affect each other more than most audits admit.
Strategy sessions with the actual owner
You are talking to the person doing the thinking, not a rotating account manager reading from a script.
A written plan you can hand to anyone
Priorities in order, with the reasoning behind each one, so a future hire or a new agency can pick it up without starting over.
In-house team coaching
If you have a marketing hire or a web person, we walk them through what to do and why, so the knowledge stays inside your business.
A second opinion on what you are already doing
Sometimes the plan is fine and execution is the problem. Sometimes the plan is the problem. We will tell you which.
Help picking the next move
Content, links, technical fixes or a rebuild: what to spend the next budget on, ranked by what will actually move a needle.
Consulting versus handing it off completely
Done-for-you SEO makes sense for a lot of businesses, and that is most of what we do day to day. Consulting is the right call in a narrower set of situations: you have the people, you are missing the map.
You already have a marketing hire
Someone in-house who needs direction more than they need a vendor doing the work around them.
Budget for guidance, not a monthly retainer
Pay once for the sessions and the plan, then execute on your own schedule.
You got burned before
A past agency left you with jargon and no results. Consulting starts by showing you exactly what happened and why.
Google itself publishes guidance on when outside SEO help is worth paying for, and states plainly that no one can guarantee rankings, including us.1 You can read Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO before you hire anyone. A consulting session is us telling you the same thing about your specific site, in plain language, with a plan attached.
What we will tell you before you book a session
Consulting will not do the work for you
If nobody on your side has time to act on the plan, a retainer is the better fit, and we will say so instead of selling you sessions you will not use.
Some fixes still need a developer
We will tell you exactly what needs building. If your site itself is the problem, a custom WordPress rebuild might be the next step, not another session.
Local versus national changes the plan
A consulting session for the Springfield map pack looks different from one for a national e-commerce site. We will tell you which situation you are actually in before we start.
What we usually end up talking about
Most first sessions land on one of three topics: why a map pack ranking will not move, whether the website itself is holding the business back, or whether ads should carry the load while organic catches up.
If the map pack is the actual goal, local SEO in Springfield gets more specific than a general session can, because so much of it lives inside your Google Business Profile rather than your website.
And if leads need to show up before organic has time to work, Google Ads management is worth discussing in the same conversation. The two are not competing strategies. They run side by side while the slower work compounds.
If you are not sure which of these is actually your problem, an SEO audit is the cheapest way to find out before booking anything else. And if the honest answer turns out to be a full marketing plan rather than a single fix, start with the wider view instead.

SEO consulting questions we get asked
What is the difference between SEO consulting and hiring an SEO agency?
An agency does the work every month. Consulting hands you the plan and the reasoning, and your team or a contractor does the work. You are paying for direction, not execution.
How long does a consulting engagement take?
Most start with an audit and one or two strategy sessions over a few weeks. Ongoing coaching for an in-house hire can continue monthly, but nothing is locked into a long contract.
Can you train the person I just hired to handle marketing?
Yes, that is one of the most common reasons businesses book consulting. We walk your hire through the actual plan instead of leaving them to guess.
Will you just tell me what I want to hear?
No. If the honest answer is that your budget is better spent elsewhere for now, we will say that instead of selling sessions you do not need.
Do you also do the work if I decide I would rather not?
Yes. Plenty of consulting clients move into a done-for-you engagement once the plan is clear. Nothing about starting with consulting locks you out of that.
Want a plan instead of a proposal?
Book a session and leave with a written, prioritised plan for your site.
