Springfield businesses in Google Maps' top 20 average 4.71 stars, and the median is 4.9. 84.5% are rated 4.5 or higher and only 5.9% sit under 4.0. That means a 4.5 rating is normal here, not a standout.
How many Google reviews does a business need to reach the top 3 on Google Maps in Springfield?
The median business in a Maps top 3 had about 156 reviews. In a typical trade, though, the #3 spot was held with just 46 reviews, and 40% of all top-3 spots had fewer than 100. What percentage of Springfield businesses have a website?
82.3% of the Springfield businesses we checked link their own website from their Google listing. Another 3.8% link only a Facebook or booking page, and 13.9% list nothing. In the Maps top 3, 92.5% had their own site, against 79% of businesses ranked 11 to 20. That shows the two go together. It does not prove the website caused the higher rank.

What these numbers mean for your business
If your trade sits near the bottom of that table, a few dozen good reviews and a complete Google listing can be enough to reach the top 3. If it sits near the top, reviews alone will not get you there, and you need the local SEO work behind the listing. How we got these numbers
Google Maps check. On 1 October 2026 we searched Google Maps from Springfield, MO for 40 trades (for example "plumber springfield mo") and recorded the top 20 results for each: star rating, review count and the website on the listing. That is 800 results and 784 different businesses, 691 of them with a Springfield address. "Top 3" means the first three Maps results seen from the center of Springfield. Results shift with where the searcher stands.
AI answer check. The same day we ran 80 Springfield searches through Google twice, a few hours apart, and recorded whether an AI Overview appeared: 40 service searches, 20 cost questions and 20 "best" searches. Both checks used live Google results through the DataForSEO API.
Census data. Business counts come from the Census County Business Patterns and Nonemployer Statistics for 2023, Greene County (FIPS 29077). The AI use figures come from the Census Business Trends and Outlook Survey, Missouri, collected 7 to 20 September 2026. Its standard error is 2.24 points.
What we left out. We publish averages only, never a list of named businesses. Averages are rounded to one decimal, nothing is rounded up. We will re-run both checks and update this page every year, and sooner if the numbers move.
