Most Kansas City Google Ads accounts leak before they convert
We inherit a lot of accounts and the same three holes are in nearly all of them. None are complicated. All of them cost money every single day until somebody opens the right report.
The search terms report has never been read. This is the free report showing what people actually typed, as opposed to the keywords you thought you were buying. Google documents it plainly.2 In a market the size of Kansas City an unwatched account will quietly spend a fortnight of budget on job seekers, students and people looking to do the work themselves.
Performance Max is spending the whole budget. It is the default Google pushes, it gives you very little control over where the money lands, and for most local service businesses it buys cheap impressions rather than customers. We run Search campaigns, because a Kansas City plumbing company needs the person typing an emergency, not a display placement.
Conversions are counted wrong. Page views logged as conversions, one phone call counted three times, form fills from spam. Once the numbers are wrong every optimisation after that makes the account worse with total confidence.
- Negatives built weekly, not once. Every account gets a negative keyword list that grows from the real search terms rather than from a template downloaded off a blog.
- Search first, and PMax only with a reason. If we run Performance Max it is because your business genuinely suits it, and we will say which part of the budget it is allowed to touch.
- Conversion tracking rebuilt before anything else. Calls over a threshold length, form submissions verified, duplicates removed. Wrong numbers are worse than no numbers.
- Landing pages that match the ad. Sending every Kansas City ad to the homepage is the fastest way to pay full price for a poor Quality Score. Google explains how relevance and landing page experience feed into what you pay per click.1
- Budget that winds down on purpose. Paid search is the bridge while the slower work compounds. If the ads are still carrying everything in month twelve, something in the plan failed.
Google Ads management for Kansas City businesses
Managed properly means somebody opens the account weekly. Everything below happens on a schedule rather than when results slip.
Search campaigns
The core. People typing a need in Kansas City, matched to an ad that answers it and a page that delivers it.
Negative keyword work
The unglamorous weekly job that decides whether the budget reaches customers or job seekers.
Landing page alignment
Each campaign points at a page that matches the ad. Often that means building one, which is where web design and paid search overlap.
Conversion tracking
Rebuilt from scratch on nearly every account we take over, because everything downstream depends on it.
Budget and bid management
Spend moved toward what converts, and reduced where search engine optimization has started carrying the term for free.
Reporting you can argue with
What was spent, what it bought, cost per lead, and which search terms we killed this month.
When Google Ads is the wrong purchase
Paid search buys attention that already exists. If nobody in Kansas City is typing what you sell, there is nothing to buy and no amount of management fixes it. In that case the money belongs in outdoor advertising, which creates familiarity before the need appears.
It is also wrong when your website cannot convert what it receives. Paying for clicks into a slow site with no clear next step is paying to annoy people. Fix the destination first.
And it is wrong as a permanent substitute for search. Ads stop the day you stop paying, where a page that ranks keeps working. Run them together: the Kansas City SEO work compounds while the ads carry the phone, and the ad spend comes down as it does.
The whole set of what we run in this metro sits on the Kansas City services page.
What a PPC campaign should be reporting back
Google Ads management is not a monthly report, it is a weekly habit. Here is what a healthy Kansas City account can tell you at any moment, and what its absence means.
Cost per lead, per campaign. Not cost per click, which measures nothing you care about. If a google ads agency reports clicks and impressions without tying them to leads, it is reporting activity rather than return on investment.
Which search terms were added as negatives this month. A PPC campaign with an unchanged negative list is an account nobody opened. This is the single fastest test of whether ad management is actually happening.
What share of spend went where. Search ads, shopping, display, and anything Performance Max touched. Budget drifting quietly into cheap placements is the most common way a google ads campaign looks busy and delivers nothing.
What changed on the landing pages. Ads and destinations are one system. Improving the ad and ignoring the page it points at caps what the account can do, which is where google ads management overlaps with website design.
The vocabulary here is older than the tool. Plenty of people still call it Google AdWords, and pay-per-click, PPC and paid search all mean the same thing in practice. None of the naming matters. What matters is whether somebody opened the search terms report this week.
Paid search is a bridge rather than a destination, and the slower work it buys time for is on our Kansas City SEO page. The full list of what this marketing agency runs in the metro is on the Kansas City services page.
Questions Kansas City business owners ask about Google Ads
Enough to buy meaningful data in your category, which varies wildly between a plumber and a law firm. What matters more than the number is that the budget is not spread across campaigns that cannot each get enough clicks to learn anything. We would rather run one campaign properly than four starved ones.
We quote management as a scope, not a slice, because a percentage rewards us for spending more of your money. Every proposal states what gets reviewed, how often, and what you receive.
Because for most local service businesses it hands control to an algorithm optimising for something that is not your phone ringing. We use Search campaigns by default and reach for PMax only when the business genuinely suits it, with a stated share of the budget.
Clicks arrive the day it goes live, which is exactly why it is a useful bridge while search compounds. Useful data takes two to four weeks, and the first month is mostly about cutting waste rather than scaling.
You should. They answer the same demand from different directions, and treating them as rivals wastes both. The normal shape is ads carrying the phone early and the spend reducing as rankings arrive.
It stays yours. It is your Google Ads account, your billing and your data, and we work inside it rather than inside an agency wrapper you cannot take with you.
