Web Design in Kansas City, MO for Businesses That Need to Be Found

A website that looks right and ranks nowhere is the most expensive thing a Kansas City business can buy. We build the structure search engines read and the pages customers act on, in the same project, and you own every part of it afterwards.

What You Are Really Buying

Web design in Kansas City is not a picture of a website

Most quotes you will get for website design are really quotes for a picture. Somebody designs a layout, hands it to a developer, and the site goes live looking exactly like the mockup and ranking nowhere. The design was never wrong. It just was not built to be found.

A Kansas City web design project that earns its money does three jobs at once. It looks like a business worth calling. It loads fast enough that nobody leaves first. And its structure tells search engines what each page is for, which is what lets the site rank instead of sitting there.

We build all three together because retrofitting the third one later means rebuilding the first two. That is the single most common reason a company pays for a website twice inside two years.

  • Structure before decoration. One page per thing you sell, named the way a customer would search for it, before anybody picks a colour. A beautiful site with eleven services on one page cannot rank for any of them.
  • Speed treated as a feature, not a report card. Google measures loading, interactivity and visual stability, and publishes exactly how.4 A slow site loses visitors before it loses rankings, and you feel the first one long before you see the second.
  • Built on WordPress unless there is a reason not to. You should be able to change your own opening hours without a retainer. When a project genuinely needs something else we say so and explain the trade.
  • Phone first, because your customers are. Every page checked at phone width before launch, not after somebody complains. We measure the document against the screen rather than glancing at a screenshot, because sideways overflow does not show up in a picture.
  • Handover, not hostage. You own the domain, the hosting and the logins. If you leave, the site leaves with you.

The most expensive mistake in a redesign, and it has nothing to do with the design. The rankings do not drop because the site changed. They drop because the addresses did, and every link other sites built over years now points at nothing.
The Pieces

What a Kansas City website build includes

Everything below is quoted as a line item. If a web design company will not itemize, you cannot tell what you are comparing.

Structure and wireframe

The page map first: one URL for each service and each area, wired so the important pages are reachable in one click. This is the part that decides whether the site can ever rank.

Design and brand

A look that matches the business you actually are. Custom, not a marketplace theme that four other Kansas City companies are also running.

Build and development

Web development on WordPress in the normal case, hand built where the project needs it. Clean markup, no page builder bloat that triples the load time.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Images sized properly, scripts trimmed, fonts loaded without blocking. Measured on a phone connection, not on the office fibre.

Copy that says something

Written for the person deciding whether to call you, seeded with the terms search engines use to work out what the page is about. Not filler around stock photography.

Search engine optimization built in

Titles, headings, schema and internal linking done during the build. Adding SEO services to a finished site costs more and works less well.

E-commerce when you sell online

Product structure, unique descriptions and the markup that earns rich results. Covered properly on our Kansas City e-commerce page.

Care after launch

Updates, backups and monitoring. A WordPress website left unpatched for a year is not a website, it is an incident waiting to happen.

The Honest Comparison

What separates Kansas City web designers, and what does not

Nearly every web design company in the metro shows the same portfolio grid and the same four promises. Here is what actually differs, and all of it is checkable before you sign anything.

Whether the site is built to be found. Ask any web designer how the structure was decided. If the answer is about layout rather than about what people search for, you are buying a picture. Ask to see a site they built two years ago and check whether it ranks today.

Whether you can edit it. Plenty of beautiful builds are effectively frozen, because changing a heading means opening a page builder nobody trained you on. Ask to be shown the edit screen before you commit, not after.

What happens at month three. A website is not finished at launch, it is started. Ask what the plan is for the twelve weeks after, and whether that is included or invoiced.

What does not differ much: the design software, the hosting, and the promise of being mobile friendly. Those are table stakes in 2026 and nobody should be charging a premium for them.

After Launch

A new website does not rank by itself

This is the part that surprises owners, so it is better said before the invoice than after. A brand new site with perfect structure still has no links pointing at it and no history, and Google mostly ranks pages that other sites vouch for. The build removes the obstacles. It does not supply the authority.

That is why a Kansas City web design project and a search campaign belong on the same timeline. The site gives search engines something worth ranking, and the SEO work gives them a reason to. Run either alone and you wait longer than you need to.

If the phone has to ring sooner than search can deliver, paid search in Kansas City covers the gap and winds down as the rankings arrive. We would rather say that plainly than sell you a website and let you wonder why month two was quiet.

Design, Development And The Rest

Where website development stops and marketing services begin

Two words get used interchangeably in quotes and they are not the same thing. Website design is what it looks like and how somebody moves through it. Website development is the building underneath: templates, forms, integrations, the bits that break at two in the morning. A KC agency that only does the first will hand you a beautiful thing that nobody can maintain.

We do both, and we are equally clear about where they end. A finished site is the start of the work rather than the end of it, and the marketing services that follow are a separate decision with a separate invoice. We would rather you understood that boundary before signing than discovered it in month two.

What tends to happen in practice: the build clears the obstacles, then one of three things carries it. Search engine optimization if your customers are already looking for what you sell. Paid search if the phone needs to ring before the slow work lands. Outdoor if nobody is searching yet and demand has to be created first.

Most Kansas City businesses need the first, some need the second for a while, and a few genuinely need the third. Knowing which you are is worth more than any design decision on the site itself.

Who We Build For

The Kansas City businesses this suits

Not every business needs a custom build, and we will say so. These are the situations where one earns its money.

Home services

Plumbers, roofers, HVAC and restoration. A page per service and per area, because one page listing eleven trades ranks for none of them and the emergency searches are where the money is.

Professional services

Law, accounting, medical and consulting. Credibility does most of the selling here, so bios, credentials and case detail matter more than animation.

Online retailers

Product structure and category architecture decided before design, which is a different project from a brochure site. Detail on our e-commerce page.

Trade and B2B

Long sales cycles where the site qualifies rather than closes. Specifications, capabilities and the kind of detail a buyer needs before making contact.

Rebuilds of sites that rank

The delicate one. Traffic is lost on rebuilds more often than it is gained, so we map every URL and redirect before anything moves. Never move a page that is already ranking.

New businesses

Small, fast, correctly structured, and built to be extended. Spending a fortune before you know what sells is the most common first-year mistake.

The Part That Goes Wrong

How website rebuilds lose traffic, and how we avoid it

This is the failure worth knowing about before you commission anything, because it is common, expensive and almost entirely preventable.

A business redesigns its site. The new one looks far better. Within six weeks enquiries have halved and nobody can say why. What happened is that the URLs changed, the old addresses now return errors, and every link any other site had built up over years now points at nothing. The rankings did not drop because the design changed. They dropped because the addresses did.

What prevents it. Every existing URL listed before the build starts. A redirect mapped from each old address to its closest new one, and tested rather than assumed. Titles and headings preserved on any page that currently ranks, with new material added above rather than replacing it. The page that earns the most is touched last and least.

The temptation we refuse. Tidying up URLs because the new structure is more logical. It usually is more logical, and it is rarely worth the risk on a page that is already working. Logic that costs you rankings is not logic, it is vanity.

If your current site ranks for anything at all, say so in the first conversation. It changes the plan, and any web designer who does not ask is about to cost you something they cannot see.

Practical Questions

Hosting, maintenance and what happens in year two

The bit nobody covers in a proposal, and the bit that decides whether the site is still good in eighteen months.

Hosting. Yours, in your name, on your card. We will recommend and set it up, and you can move it whenever you like. Agencies that host on your behalf without giving you the login have built themselves a retention mechanism rather than a service.

Maintenance. WordPress needs updating. A site left unpatched for a year is a security incident waiting for a date. Care plans are optional with us and priced separately, and if you would rather handle it in house we will show you how.

Editing. You should be able to change hours, prices, staff and photographs yourself without calling anybody. We hand over a walkthrough recording with the site, which costs us half an hour and saves you a small fortune over the years.

Year two. The site is a starting point. Pages get added as services grow and as searches change, and that is normal rather than a sign something was wrong. What should not happen is a full rebuild every two years, and if a KC agency's business model depends on that, notice it.

Plain Answers

Design, SEO and the words agencies use interchangeably

A quick glossary, because the quotes you are comparing will not use the same words for the same things.

Web designer versus web developer. The designer decides how it looks and how somebody moves through it. The web developer builds it. Small web design agencies often have one person doing both, which is fine and sometimes better, as long as neither half is an afterthought.

SEO friendly. Every design services company claims it and almost nobody defines it. Ask what it means concretely and the good answer covers page structure, headings, speed, and whether each page targets one thing. A business website that is genuinely built for search results was planned that way before the first mockup, not certified afterwards.

Design and SEO as one project or two. One, if you can. Web design and SEO argue with each other when they arrive separately, because the second one wants structure the first one did not build. Doing them together costs less than doing them twice.

Plugins. On a WordPress build these do the heavy lifting, and the count matters more than owners expect. Every plugin is code somebody else maintains and a slower page. We use as few as the job allows.

Leads, not visits. A site exists to generate leads and grow your business, not to collect traffic. The local Kansas City search that brings ten ready buyers beats a national one bringing four hundred readers, which is also why the search work and PPC get pointed at intent rather than volume. Digital marketing that reports visits without reporting enquiries is reporting the wrong number.

Before You Call

Questions Kansas City business owners ask about web design

How much does web design cost in Kansas City?

It depends on page count and whether you sell online, so we quote the scope rather than a flat figure. A straightforward local service site is a different project from a fifty page e-commerce build, and any website design company quoting both at one number is guessing at one of them. What we will always do is itemize: pages, revisions, what is included after launch, and what is not.

Do you build on WordPress?

Usually yes, because it means you can change your own hours, prices and staff photos without paying anybody. We avoid the heavy page builders that make a site slow and awkward to edit. When a project genuinely suits something else, we explain why rather than defaulting to what is easiest for us.

Can you work on my existing site instead of rebuilding it?

Often, and it is usually the cheaper answer. Most sites we look at need structure, speed and content fixed rather than replaced. We recommend a rebuild only when the platform is actually blocking the work, and we never move a page that is already ranking in order to do it.

How long does a Kansas City website take?

Most builds run four to eight weeks, and the thing that decides it is almost never us. It is how fast the content and photographs come back. We give you the list up front so the wait is visible instead of mysterious.

Will the new site rank straight away?

No, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. A new site has no links and no history, and those are most of what decides rankings. The build clears the obstacles, then the search work supplies the authority. Google itself warns you to be wary of anyone guaranteeing a number one ranking.1

Do you do the writing as well?

Yes. Copy is part of the build, not a thing you are left to supply at the end. It is drafted with AI and then edited by a person, which is the only way it holds up, and we fact check anything that is a number or a claim about your business with you before it goes live.

Who owns the website when it is done?

You do. The domain, the hosting account and every login. We have no interest in holding a business hostage to a password, and any web designer who is cagey about this question has answered it.
