What reviews actually affect
The obvious one is choice. Three businesses sit in the map pack and the one with more and better reviews gets the call, which is why review count moves inquiries more reliably than it moves rank.
The newer one is AI recommendation. When somebody asks an assistant for a Kansas City recommendation, it is reading review text, not just averages. A review that says what the job was and how it went is quotable. Five stars and no words is not.
The method that actually works
A text from the owner's own phone, shortly after the work, with the direct link. That gets a response from roughly half the people asked. Automated sequences get a fraction of that and need registration before they can send at all.
It feels like the less scalable option and it is, which is exactly why it works. People answer a person.
When to ask
While the job is still fresh and while the customer is still pleased. A week later the feeling has faded and the request feels like admin. The same ask, sent two days apart, performs very differently.
And ask once. A second nudge is fine, a third is how a happy customer becomes an irritated one.
Ask for detail, not for stars
A request that says leave us a review gets a star rating. A request that asks what we did and how it went gets sentences, and sentences are what both future customers and AI assistants read.
You cannot script it and you should not try. But what you ask for shapes what you get.
What to do with a bad one
Reply, publicly, once, without arguing. Acknowledge, state what you did about it, and offer to take it offline. The audience for that reply is not the person who wrote it, it is everybody reading later.
A perfect five with no negatives at all reads as suspicious to a lot of people. A handful of imperfect reviews handled well is more convincing than a flawless record.
The things we will not do
No bought reviews. No incentives in exchange for a rating, which is against the rules on every major platform. No filtering customers so only the happy ones get asked, which is both prohibited and obvious to anybody reading.
And we will not mark up reviews from other sites as if they were collected on yours. That gets structured data ignored across the whole site.
Reviews somewhere other than Google
AI assistants weight some other platforms more heavily than people expect, and a business with everything on one platform looks thinner than one with a spread. A handful elsewhere is worth having.
This sits inside the local SEO in Kansas City work, because the profile and the reviews on it are the same project rather than two.
Reply to the good ones too
Most businesses reply only to complaints, which makes every reply look defensive. Replying to good reviews as well takes a minute each and makes the profile look like somebody is home.
Keep them short and specific. A reply that names the job reads as real. A copied line of thanks pasted under forty reviews reads as automated, because it is.
It also helps the AI side, because a thread with real detail in both directions gives an assistant more to work with than a star rating and a template.
Review questions Kansas City owners ask
Text customers from your own phone shortly after the work, with the direct link. It gets about a fifty percent response. Automation gets closer to one in six and needs registration before it can send anything.
No. Incentivizing reviews is against the rules on every major platform and risks the reviews being removed and the profile being penalized. We will not set it up even if asked.
Reply once, publicly, without arguing. Acknowledge it, say what you did, offer to continue offline. The reply is for everybody who reads it later, not for the person who wrote it.
Less than people assume and more than nothing. The bigger effect is on whether somebody calls you once they see you. In the badge advertising products the effect on placement is much more direct.
Because assistants read the text, not just the score. A review describing the specific job in specific words is something an assistant can use to answer a specific question. A bare five star rating gives it nothing to work with.
A few, yes. Assistants weight some platforms differently and a profile with everything in one place looks thinner than one with a spread. Google stays the priority for the map.
