Schema Markup in Kansas City, MO

Schema is the least glamorous thing on this list and one of the highest return. It is code nobody sees that tells a machine exactly what your page is, and most Kansas City sites still do not have it.

What It Is

What schema actually does

A search engine reading your page has to work out what kind of thing it is looking at. Is this a business, a service, an article, a product. Schema removes the guessing by stating it in a format built for machines rather than people.

It does not change what a visitor sees. It changes what a machine understands, which is the whole point. Nobody reading your page will ever know it is there, and every search engine and assistant that visits will.

Why Now

Why it matters more than it did two years ago

AI assistants have made it matter more. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity recommend businesses, and they are reading structured, stateable facts far more readily than they are reading your hero paragraph.

A page that states what it is in schema is quotable. A page that only implies it is a guess the machine may get wrong, and a wrong citation is worse than none.

What Goes Where

Which type belongs on which page

Organization site wide. LocalBusiness on the profile landing page only, matching the profile exactly, not on every page. Service on each service page. FAQ where there are real questions and answers visible on the page. Breadcrumb on anything with a path.

Getting this wrong is common. Putting LocalBusiness on every page, or marking up questions that do not appear on the page, is worse than having none.

Honesty

Schema has to match what is on the page

Marking up five questions that are not visible on the page, or reviews you have not received, is the kind of thing that gets structured data ignored site wide. The rule is that schema describes what is there, not what you wish was there.

We also do not mark up reviews collected on third party sites as if they were yours. That is a line we hold even when a client asks.

Validation

It gets validated rather than assumed

Schema fails silently. A missing bracket or a wrong field name means the whole block is ignored and nothing tells you. So every block gets run through a validator before it ships and after it goes live.

That is a five minute step that catches the difference between schema and the appearance of schema.

Where It Fits

A small job inside a bigger one

On its own, schema is a modest ranking factor. What it does reliably is make a page eligible for richer results and far easier for an AI assistant to cite correctly.

It is usually added as part of the Kansas City SEO services work rather than sold alone, and on a new build it goes in from the start as part of the Kansas City web design job.

Doing It Yourself

If you want to do it yourself

It is genuinely possible. The vocabulary is public, the formats are documented, and a validator will tell you whether what you wrote parses. For a small site it is an afternoon.

The things to get right: one Organization block site wide, LocalBusiness only on the profile landing page, and never mark up anything that is not visible on the page. Those three rules avoid most of the damage.

If you do it and want a second pair of eyes before it ships, send it over. Checking schema takes minutes and a broken block is worth catching before it goes live rather than after.

Before You Call

Schema questions we get asked

Will schema improve my rankings?

Modestly and indirectly. The bigger effects are eligibility for richer search results and being cited correctly by AI assistants. Anybody promising a ranking jump from schema alone is overselling it.

Which pages need it?

Organization site wide, LocalBusiness only on the profile landing page, Service on service pages, FAQ where real questions appear on the page, Breadcrumb where there is a path. More is not better.

Can I add it with a plugin?

Sometimes, and a plugin is better than nothing. Plugins tend to produce generic markup and occasionally duplicate blocks, which is its own problem. Hand written is tighter.

How do I know if I have it?

Run your page through a structured data validator. If nothing comes back, you have none. If errors come back, you have the appearance of it, which helps nobody.

Does schema help with ChatGPT?

It helps, yes. Assistants favor facts that are clearly stated and machine readable. Schema is one of several things that make a business easy to cite, alongside a complete Bing listing and detailed reviews.

Will schema show my reviews as stars in Google?

Sometimes, and only if the reviews are genuinely collected and displayed on your own site. Marking up reviews you gathered elsewhere, or that do not appear on the page, is against the rules and gets structured data ignored across the whole site. We will not do it even when asked, because the downside lands on you.

Does your site tell Google what it is?

We will map where you rank across Kansas City and show you the gaps.
